Jazzfest 2019

Rain showers threatened but they lifted north just in time to let Jazzfest 2019 fill downtown Springfield with “cool”.

It was an impressive showing! Seven jazz bands took the main stage while MSU, Drury and Evangel played away on the square.

Missouri Jazz Orchestra (MOJO) and the Lite version were there. Randy Hamm, Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at Missouri State University, keeps a ten plus year tradition going with these two groups. The “full” MOJO is around 17 players, give or take, while MOJO List is usually around 5-7.

Many of the other players are either professors of music or formal/current students in the university various programs.

Personally, my interest in jazz in Springfield continues to grow with time. There are many groups and many venues at which to play.

My night was capped off perfectly with sounds of jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour and his band at the Gillioz Theater. He has accomplished so much! And his son Wes on drums, well, sometimes talent just runs in a family.

Check out the video below, a collage of just about everybody at Jazzfest 2019.

A Great Lesson and Show

Gary Ellison gives us a music history lesson and a show at my daughters piano recital. Anyone know the name of Missouri’s most famous composer?
